Issey Miyake founded his namesake brand in 1970 in Tokyo after studying graphic design at Tama Art University and working in Paris and New York. Miyake sought to create clothing that combined traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern technology and international fashion trends. In the 1980s, Miyake developed his signature pleating technique, resulting in the creation of the 'Pleats Please' line in 1993. The pleated garments are made from a single piece of high-quality polyester fabric, which is pleated after sewing, allowing for freedom of movement, ease of care, and innovative forms. Miyake's design philosophy emphasizes the relationship between body and cloth, often exploring the space between the two. He incorporates concepts from architecture, sculpture, and contemporary art, creating garments that are both functional and artistic. In addition to clothing, Issey Miyake has ventured into fragrances, accessories, and even technology, collaborating with artists and engineers to develop new materials and design processes. The brand is known for its experimental approach, such as the 'A-POC' (A Piece of Cloth) concept, which allows garments to be cut from a single tube of fabric. Issey Miyake stepped down from active design in 1997 but continued to oversee the brand's direction. His protégés have carried on his legacy, maintaining the brand's innovative spirit. The brand remains influential in the fashion world, celebrated for its fusion of tradition, technology, and timeless design.
