A Bathing Ape, commonly known as BAPE, was founded in 1993 by Tomoaki Nagao, better known as Nigo, in the Harajuku district of Tokyo. Inspired by street culture, music, and pop art, Nigo created BAPE to offer exclusive and limited-edition streetwear pieces. BAPE quickly gained popularity for its unique designs, including the iconic Ape Head logo, shark hoodies, and vibrant camouflage patterns. The brand cultivated an aura of exclusivity by producing limited quantities, creating high demand and a devoted following. Throughout the 2000s, BAPE expanded internationally, opening stores in major cities like New York, London, and Hong Kong. The brand collaborated with various artists and companies, including Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and Pepsi, further elevating its global profile. In 2011, Nigo sold BAPE to the Hong Kong fashion conglomerate I.T Group but remained involved as creative director until 2013. Under new ownership, BAPE continued to grow, maintaining its relevance through collaborations and embracing new trends. BAPE has significantly influenced streetwear culture worldwide, bridging Japanese fashion with global hip-hop and youth culture. The brand remains a symbol of originality and continues to inspire streetwear enthusiasts and designers alike.
